n8nAutomation & Integration
A workflow platform I use for self-hosted, API-driven, and multi-step automation.
I use n8n for trigger-action workflows, multi-branch logic, error handling, retries, and external API calls. It can run on client-controlled infrastructure when the deployment, connected services, and retention settings fit the client's data requirements.

How I use n8n
I've built 50+ n8n workflows across healthcare, real estate, financial services, and freight forwarding operations. n8n's visual builder handles the routine stuff quickly, and its code nodes let me drop into JavaScript when the logic gets complex. Self-hosting gives a client control over the n8n instance and its stored execution data, but connected services still receive the data sent to them. I typically deploy n8n on client-controlled infrastructure when that operating model fits the security and data-residency requirements, then configure retention, encryption, access controls, and downstream processors for the specific workflow.

Authentication and access
The n8n public REST API uses an API key in the X-N8N-API-KEY header. Credentials inside workflows use each connected provider's OAuth, token, or key flow.
Useful data and actions
- Workflow definitions, activation state, tags, and project placement
- Execution status, timing, errors, and retry context
- Webhook payloads and normalized records passed between nodes
- Credential metadata and schemas without exposing stored secret values
Constraints to confirm
- The public API is unavailable during the n8n free trial; API-key scoping is Enterprise-only, while non-Enterprise keys have broad account access.
- Self-hosting transfers patching, backups, encryption, availability, access control, and execution-data retention to the operator.
- Self-hosting the orchestrator does not keep all workflow data local: every connected API receives the fields sent to it and remains a separate data processor.
