SendGridAutomation & Integration

Transactional and marketing email delivery for automated non-sensitive communication.

I use SendGrid for transactional confirmations, approved marketing sequences, market updates, and non-sensitive status notifications. Delivery events and suppression data can feed follow-up workflows, while PHI and GLBA-covered nonpublic personal information stay out of SendGrid.

How I use SendGrid

I use SendGrid's Mail Send API for transactional emails and its marketing features for consented campaigns, with n8n or another workflow system supplying approved personalization fields. For real estate work, that can include personalized market updates sent through authenticated domains with suppression handling in place. Healthcare use is limited to general communications that contain no PHI, and financial-services workflows exclude GLBA-covered nonpublic personal information; sensitive content requires a separately approved channel and compliance design.

Guardrail: Twilio states that SendGrid does not support HIPAA-compliant transmission and must not be used for PHI or GLBA-covered nonpublic personal information.

What the integration supports

Facts checked

Authentication and access

SendGrid v3 API requests use a scoped API key as a Bearer token. SMTP can use the literal username apikey with the API key as the password; username-and-password authentication is not supported.

Useful data and actions

  • Message send requests, recipient personalization, templates, and scheduled send identifiers
  • Delivery, bounce, block, deferred, open, click, unsubscribe, and spam-report events
  • Contact lists, suppression groups, and marketing campaign membership
  • Aggregate deliverability and engagement statistics exposed by the account plan

Constraints to confirm

  • Twilio states that SendGrid does not support HIPAA-compliant transmission and must not be used for PHI or GLBA-covered nonpublic personal information.
  • Sender identity or domain authentication is required; reputation, consent, suppression handling, and applicable email law remain the sender's responsibility.
  • Mail Send accepts at most 1,000 personalization objects per request, while account credits, features, and statistics access vary by plan.
