Open DentalAutomation & Integration
Connect Open Dental to CRMs, marketing platforms, and patient communication systems.
Open Dental provides a permissioned REST API for patient, appointment, insurance, payment, and clinical resources. Each practice enables its own key and approved access level.

How I use Open Dental
Open Dental's supported API route uses a developer key and a practice-specific CustomerKey. Remote connections also depend on the office eConnector, enabled API access, the practice's software version, and the permissions approved for the application. Patient, appointment, insurance, payment, and selected clinical resources can support CRM, recall, billing, and communication workflows without treating unrestricted database access as the integration contract.

What the integration supports

Authentication and access
Open Dental REST requests use an ODFHIR DeveloperKey/CustomerKey header. The developer obtains portal access, and each practice generates and enables its own CustomerKey; remote access also requires the office eConnector.
Useful data and actions
- Patients and demographics
- Appointments and appointment types
- Insurance plans and benefits
- Payments and adjustments
- Allergies and other clinical records
Constraints to confirm
- Open Dental reviews requested resources and read, create, and update permissions before issuing developer access.
- Remote methods depend on the practice's Open Dental version and require the API and eConnector to remain enabled.
- Remote read-only access can be limited to one request every five seconds; broader permissions allow one request per second, with per-customer sequential processing and 429 responses.
- Open Dental recommends that API developers establish an appropriate BAA with each client; the practice remains responsible for its configuration and permitted use.
