In one sentence
The time between a new lead reaching a business and the business's first real response to that lead.
Speed to lead is how long it takes a business to respond after a prospect asks for something: a web form, a portal inquiry, a missed call, a text. It is measured from the moment the inquiry arrives to the first response that a person would recognize as useful, not just an automatic "thanks, we got it".
Why it matters
A Harvard Business Review study published in 2011 by Oldroyd, McElheran and Elkington looked at web leads at 2,241 US companies. It found that firms which tried to contact a lead within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify it as firms that waited longer, and over sixty times as likely as firms that waited a day or more. The same study found that many companies took far longer than an hour, and that some never responded at all. Results vary by industry and lead source, but the direction has held up: the first reply often decides who gets the conversation.
What slows response down
Leads arrive after hours and on weekends. They land in a shared inbox or in a portal nobody watches. Round-robin rules route a lead to someone who is busy or away. Agents call once, get no answer and move on.
What speed to lead automation does:
Instant first contact
A text or email goes out within seconds and asks a real question about what the lead needs.
Routing
The lead is assigned to an available person, with a fallback if nobody claims it in a set time.
Follow-up
A sequence of messages continues until the lead replies or opts out.
Tracking
Response time is measured per lead source and per person, so the number can be managed.
In our builds
for real estate teams and service businesses, the first reply is automatic, the hand-off to a person is timed, and every lead has an owner. Our speed-to-lead package lists the price and what it includes.
