Anthropic opened a research preview of Claude Duet on October 21, 2026. It is a separate app where Claude works as a proactive agent: it sends you a brief each morning, checks your connected apps through the day, works on tasks while you are away, and asks before it sends, pays, signs or deletes anything. Anthropic says it built Duet for professionals and small business owners.
This post covers what Duet does today, the limits that matter for a business, the jobs we would hand it first, the approvals we would keep, and when a plain scheduled workflow is the better buy.
We read two Anthropic pages on October 22, 2026: the launch post Introducing Claude Duet and the help article Get started with Claude Duet. Every Duet fact below comes from those pages. We do not have Duet access yet and have not tested it.
What Claude Duet is
Duet is a standalone app on iOS and Android, and it is also on claude.ai. You message it the way you would message an assistant, by typing or by voice, in one ongoing thread. You can open separate channels for different topics, and they share the same memory. It carries over the memory, skills and connected apps you already set up in your Claude account.
It runs on its own computer in the cloud, with its own browser, so it keeps working after you close the app and does not need your laptop or phone to be on. For sites with no connector, it uses that browser. Bigger results come back as files you can review, such as a research brief, a financial model, a slide deck or a dashboard.
A Tasks tab shows what it is working on and which tasks need your input. It may say a task looks finished, but only you can mark it done.
Who can use it now
Access is narrow during the preview:
- US accounts only, on the Pro or Max plan, through a waitlist that lets people in by waves.
- Not on Team or Enterprise plans yet. Anthropic says it plans to add them later.
- It runs only on Claude Opus 5.5. You cannot pick a model.
- It is included in Pro and Max at no extra cost during the preview, but it uses the same usage limits as the rest of Claude. Background work such as the morning brief and check-ins counts toward those limits.
That last point decides a lot. Duet checks your accounts every few hours rather than nonstop, because nonstop checking would use up your plan faster. Anthropic's help page says plainly that something urgent can arrive between checks.
What it asks before doing
Anthropic says Duet reads, drafts and prepares work on its own. Before it sends a message, makes a payment, signs a document or deletes anything, it shows you what it is about to do and waits for your approval. If you cannot approve right away, it finishes the rest of the task and brings the approval back later.
Some actions are blocked even with your approval: trading securities, moving money between accounts and accessing someone else's account. Anthropic also says a new classifier is meant to reject requests to share the strictest tier of information, such as credit card numbers and government ID, and that other sensitive details such as health or personal finances go out only when you explicitly tell it to send them.
Purchases go through Link, Stripe's wallet, or Shop Pay from Shopify. Duet confirms the item, you approve the spend, and each purchase uses a one-time card that works only for that purchase, so your real card number is not shared. When a site asks for a password, you type it into a separate form on your device, which is designed to keep it out of the chat.
What it cannot do yet
These limits come from Anthropic's help page:
- 1It does not make phone calls or send texts to other people. With approval, it can send email from accounts you connected.
- 2You cannot watch it work in its browser or take over that browser.
- 3It cannot see the files on your computer or all of your Claude projects.
- 4Some connectors, such as Slack, work with limits. Microsoft 365 is not available yet.
- 5It can misread a thread or misjudge what is urgent. Anthropic says to review drafts and approval requests before confirming.
If your business runs on Outlook and Microsoft 365, Duet is not ready for you yet. If you need texts to customers, it is not the tool for that either.
How a small business would use this
Anthropic lists connectors for QuickBooks, Stripe, Gusto, HubSpot, Docusign, Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Canva and Shopify among the 6,000+ in the Claude Marketplace. These are the first jobs we would give it. None of this describes a client result.
- 1The morning brief. Connect email and calendar first and nothing else for a week. Read the brief each day and note what it flagged, what it missed and what it raised that did not matter. That week tells you whether its judgment fits your business before you connect anything that touches money.
- 2Unpaid invoice reminders. Ask it to check QuickBooks or Stripe for overdue invoices and draft reminders for you to approve. The approval step stays on, and you read each draft before it goes. Our post on finance agents and approval gates covers which money steps should always wait for a person.
- 3Sales follow-ups. Have it draft follow-up emails from HubSpot contact and deal history for deals that have gone quiet. Keep the send approval on, at least until you have read a few dozen drafts and trust its tone.
- 4Meeting prep. Ask for a short brief on a company before a call. Anthropic's help page says that when Duet gives a number or a summary, it tells you which email, file or spreadsheet it came from, so check those sources on anything you will repeat to a client.
What we would set up around it: connect one app at a time; keep every approval on; write down which actions you will never approve from your phone, such as payroll changes or contract signatures, and do those at a desk; and review a week of its work before adding the next app. Our guide to AI agent permissions and human approval explains how to tie approval to an exact action rather than a general yes.
Payroll in Gusto is on Anthropic's list. We would not hand payroll to a preview product until the brief and invoice jobs have run cleanly for a while, and even then we would approve every run.
When a scheduled workflow is cheaper
A proactive agent uses model time to decide what matters, and every background check counts toward your plan. Many small business jobs do not need that judgment:
- "Email me every invoice more than 30 days overdue each Monday" is a fixed rule. A scheduled workflow in QuickBooks, Stripe, Zapier or Make does it the same way every time, without using any of your Claude limits.
- "Text the client a reminder the day before the appointment" needs texting, which Duet does not do.
- "Copy every new form lead into the CRM" is a sync job, not a judgment call.
Duet earns its place on work that changes every day: reading a messy inbox, deciding which emails in a full inbox need you, or pulling a brief together from five places. Our post on AI agents vs. automations walks through how to sort the two. If you already rely on Zapier, our note on Zapier Agents becoming a Zap step covers how an AI step now fits inside a fixed workflow.
It is also not worth it if your team needs to share the agent. Duet is tied to one person's Claude account, and Team plans cannot use it yet.
How it compares with self-hosted agents
Duet is a hosted, single-user agent on Anthropic's cloud computer. Agents like OpenClaw or Hermes, which we have covered beside Meta's Muse, run on a machine you control and can be shared by a team, but you own the setup and the security. For a solo owner on Pro or Max who mostly lives in Gmail, QuickBooks and HubSpot, Duet is the lower-effort test. For a team, or for jobs that need texts, calls or Microsoft 365, it is not there yet.
How this fits implementation work
OrchestriAI is not an Anthropic partner or reseller. We build AI agent systems and workflow automation for small teams, with clear limits on what each agent can change, and we connect them to the tools a business already uses. If you want to know which of your weekly jobs needs an agent and which only needs a scheduled workflow, start with the free automation audit.
Independence and limitations
OrchestriAI is an independent implementation provider. Product names are used for identification only. OrchestriAI is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Anthropic, Stripe, Shopify or any other company named here. This article summarizes Anthropic's public launch post and help article as of October 22, 2026. Claude Duet is a research preview, so access, features, limits and pricing can change. Check Anthropic's pages before you plan around it.
